Deck Extension and Platform Interface Works

Oct 21, 2026 | Case Studies

⭐ Cairngorm Asset Solutions

Project Highlights

  • Delivered within a five-week programme during the rig’s shipyard stay
  • Completed on time and within budget
  • Fabrication, construction and offshore installation managed as one integrated scope
  • Replacement stairway fabricated and delivered within three days
  • Installation clashes resolved without compromising the deck extension’s structural integrity

Objectives

Following a change to the drilling unit’s position, the existing connecting stairway could no longer reach between the main deck and the wellhead platform landing area.

The client required a 7 m × 4 m deck extension to provide a safe connection between the two structures. Cairngorm Asset Solutions (CAS) was responsible for developing the proposed design into fabrication drawings, identifying suitable European equivalents for the specified steel grades and sections, procuring the deck extension and completing the installation works.

Challenges

A crane load-testing padeye and several overboard deluge lines conflicted with the proposed location of the deck extension. The deck extension padeyes also clashed with the existing bridge landing platform.

A replacement stairway between the landing platform and main deck was also required at short notice. All work had to be completed within a demanding five-week programme towards the end of the drilling unit’s shipyard stay.

Cairngorm Solution

Cairngorm Asset Solutions worked with rig management to remove the crane load-testing padeye and reroute the overboard deluge lines clear of the deck extension.

The deck extension padeyes were retained to maintain structural integrity, with the bridge landing platform modified to fit around them.

A replacement stairway, including treads and handrails, was fabricated and delivered within three days, ensuring it was onboard before the drilling unit left port.

The construction team then completed the offshore interface works, including installation of the deck extension, landing platform and connecting stairway. Despite the additional work, the project was delivered on time and within budget
